People sometimes forget that the scariest, most iconic creatures in horror film first appeared in book form. And the books are often quite good, and not nearly as campy as the movies. I first encountered Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in college, and it's a fantastic read. I stumbled upon this re-imagined cover online, which is part of a crowdsourced collection called Recovering the Classics at the Creative Action Network. I think this cover says it all much more effectively, and scarily, than our pop-culture image of Frankenstein.
